Venturing into New Territories – ART

The Art world is very unique.

In my experience, much of it comes down to what is on trend, the political agenda being pursued, who you are (background) and most of all, who you know.

If you go against the tide, you will find a lot of opposition, and very little support.

For the passionate artist looking to make a career out of art, the road is narrow unless you choose to create popular art that you know will sell. For those of us with different ideas, that don’t fit the standard blank canvas, it is much more difficult to succeed, though not impossible.

The key is to get your tribe to see your art work and be intrigued enough to want to know more, see more and eventually want to buy a piece of you.

Sadly government grants are often given to the same people, and the art world is very picky as to who they let in, it is not all embracing and if you’re not into smooching, being a tad false (which I am personally not), then you are on your own. Don’t expect support from those closest to you, or the local art community, because you will probably become very disappointed if you don’t get it.

Personally I’m a rather independent person and continue to do me, progressing in my craft, continuing to explore and learn new things, in all areas of art.

I don’t like to be stagnant in my practice and require stimulation from new and exciting ideas, exploring new mediums, and modern tech.

Some seasoned artist have said ‘that I am rather child like’ because I refuse to pick one style and theme for the rest of my life as many artist do, to become known for their style, and perhaps this is true.

I much prefer to be authentic to who I am, create whatever comes to mind, rather than be restricted to something I created long ago and to just stick with that. In saying that, I am certainly happy to revisit areas I have explored in the past, go through my old notes and journals and expand on those concepts.

So in closing, keep doing what You Love, keep creating, you will have gaps, hills and ditches along the way. Don’t be too disheartened if you don’t get much support, that is part of the journey, as long as you are enjoying what you do, that is all that really matters. At least you can say, you tried, you created what you wanted, not what was expected of you.

Good Luck on your artistic journey

  2. Sadly, I know that’s all very true. You certainly aren’t alone. I think people just fear what they don’t understand and honestly some simply don’t understand abstract art. I can’t figure out if it’s simply too hard for them to comprehend or what? Maybe they’re incapable of understanding its meaning because the only meanings they understand are realistic or obvious ones. That doesn’t mean that it’s not great to be true to who you are and create what you love. That’s a sign of a strong person. *Winks* Personally, I love abstract paintings and I think there should be more of them. People just don’t understand them but they will. Many people don’t understand dreams either. Yet I don’t know how many dreams have created thousands of wonderful things all around the world. In other words, some of the greatest things have come from what people do not understand. I hope that you know you are appreciated. I agree 100% that you have to protect yourself if you get into the real artworld though because some seriously will not even think twice before stomping all over you. That’s sadly just a part of being in the artworld. One that you just get used to. I don’t know about you but it always tend to bother me to a point. Just not as much as it used to. Anyway, great post. Hope that you have very happy holidays!
